This concept project was initiated by the love of food by the owner of GUTS + GRIT, Joey Nelson. He created three custom brines for slow cooking on his Big Green Egg. From the name Dios Del Sol we created an Argentinian aesthetic through typography, bright colors and patterns based on the ingredients. To allow the ingredients to show through on a paper label we cut it short and brought it to the top of the bottle. As the brine is used a pattern from the back label shows through the bottle.

This concept uses a circular mark that has “The Path Outfitters” and “Provider of Quality Goods,” a tagline I created to express the standard of what you sell. Inside of the circle is an illustration of the moon, sun, water and earth. These four things represent the types of merchandise you sell as well as the art of nature. The illustration can be used by itself on t-shirts or collateral.

Ozark Beer Co. is located in Rogers, Arkansas. They strive to make great beer that speaks to the quality and character of they we are and the region of NW Arkansas. With four labels under their belt, they set out to do an Ozark Lager. We were tasked with doing new concepts that kept in line with their current labels. Freight Genius is a Transportation Management System (TMS) that manages loads from their origin to destination. Unlike other products on the market, Freight Genius is less expensive and easier to use thus filling a void in the TMS marketplace. The visual language begins with a logo mark that represents tracking something from A to B. The outer shape is an outline of a three dimensional box. We chose a box to symbolize “freight”. This isometric view creates a symmetrical shape that is pleasing to the eye. The lines start and end at different points but still utilize the center of the shape. The typography chosen is a clean sans serif with letters customized using angles from the logo mark.

One of the CEOs of Matchstick Studio brews beer so he was able to create three new recipes just for this project. The concept of collaborating with a brewery to make a custom beer was carried throughout the label design and the illustrations. We distributed 20 sets of these custom beers in a handmade carrier that also contained pint glasses and a note from our studio.

I enjoy finding a way to explore my passions and create a personal project from it. My wife and I celebrated the news of our first child by taking a trip to the American Southwest. We tracked statistics from the trip, collected items from National Parks and took photos of everything. When we came home I had a treasure trove of content to work with and created a book for us to keep forever.

The Idle Class showcases the best undiscovered talent in poetry, prose, cinema, sound, art and design in Arkansas. Each issue is designed by a different art director or design firm, this time by Guts + Grit. For the winter 2018 issue makers from throughout the state were chosen to represent their perspective fields. For each section a maker stamp was created to help carry the concept through the whole magazine. Simple typography and layouts were used to let the content be the important piece.

A great logo is fundamental to a great brand identity. The ability for a logo to thrive in any application is a principal requirement of every well-considered logo. Although most of the marks have full color variations, they are represented on this page in their simplest form.
